Different Types of CNG Hose
Typically, a gas hose to be utilised at a gas facility or any industrial unit is categorised into two types:
High Pressure Hoses
Under the laws of several nations like the United Kingdom and Europe, high pressure gas hoses are expected to be sold out as an assembly. This implies they are expected to feature factory-fitted ferrules or metal sleeves along with connectors at each end. This helps in minimising the risks of a potential gas leak. It is allowed to use a high pressure gas hose for a low pressure appliance. However, vice versa is not allowed.
High pressure gas hoses for LPG are expected to meet specific standards. For instance, according to British standards, they should fulfill the 3212 Type 2 Classification. Under this standard, gas hoses should possess a double-walled reinforced tube featuring an outer covering -in black or orange. Both low, as well as high pressure hoses, should feature the BS number along with additional details like the name of the manufacturer that is stamped on the hose and the date of manufacturing.
High pressure gas hoses are utilised with any appliance requiring a powerful heat output -above the range of 100,000 BTU every hour. For example, it would include warehouse heaters, gas torches, large barbecues, grain dryers, and even brooding equipment for game & poultry birds. The short gas hoses typically run between gas cylinders and wall-mounted regulators in motorhomes and caravans.
As these are high pressure gas hoses, they are expected to be manufactured with the help of built-in connectors. Moreover, they should not be more than 1 metre in length. Most of these hoses are black. Still, you can also obtain stainless steel variants -armoured hoses. These are typically used in industrial applications as they tend to last longer.
Low Pressure Gas Hoses
These gas hoses must comply with the standard BS 3212 Type 1. The standard states that the hoses should be black or orange. Moreover, these hoses should be secured well with dedicated worm-drive clips. These are available as rounded metal clamps that are smooth towards the inside. There is no need to reinforce them to the same extent as the high pressure gas hoses.

Temperature Requirements of CNG Hose
Gas hoses are gas supply equipment subjected to varying temperatures. While some applications remain at static temperatures, this isn’t always the case. Select a hose that can withstand the maximum and minimum temperatures encountered during operation. Material degradation, loss of flexibility, and even cracks and breaks can occur when hoses get improper use within their specified temperature range.
Things to Consider While Selecting the Right Type of CNG Hose
Whether you require access to a low or high pressure hose, it is always recommended to choose a suitable gas hose. Avoid having access to a second-hand model as it could come with hidden defects. It would be a poor decision especially if you have to use the hose frequently. Poor quality gas hose is made out of thinner and less flexible material that will be more liable to leaks, cracking, and hardening. You might have to replace the same soon enough.
Some of the core factors to consider while selecting the correct type of hose are:
Size: Most industries or units end up buying the wrong size of fittings for the propane or natural gas hose. It is because they are not able to measure the same accurately. Some of the essential measurements you need to consider while choosing the gas hose are OD or Outside Diameter, NPS or Nominal Pipe Size, and the ID or Inside Diameter of the hose.
The right measurement you should select should correspond with the inside diameter of the gas hose. For instance, a gas hose with 3/8” of Natural Gas should have an inside diameter of 3/8”.
Temperature: Depending on the application it is aimed for, a gas hose at an industrial unit is usually used for transferring gases or liquids at different temperatures. Ensure that you are aware of the peak temperatures (both minimum and maximum) the hose is capable of withstanding. In this way, you will have a better idea of the type of industrial gas hose you need for the application.
The temperature rating of the gas hose is the maximum temperature range at which you can use the hose safely. Most hoses have a temperature rating of 200 Degree Fahrenheit. Ensure that you are checking the temperature rating of the hose before purchasing.
Application: Gas hoses are used across a wide range of applications -including welding hoses, hoses used for gas cylinder filling, fuel hoses for gas (LPG), medical gas hoses, loading or unloading, emptying or refilling hoses, and food gas hoses. When choosing gas hoses, some properties to consider are gas contamination, electrostatic properties, flammability, temperature & pressure, explosiveness, safety requirements, and the flow rate.
Media: Gas and air hoses are designed to transfer compressed gases or air from one point to another in medical, industrial, agricultural, and construction applications. These hoses are usually made up of PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride), EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer), Silicone, and PTFE (Polytetrafluoroethylene). Depending on the media of transfer for air or gases, you should select the right gas hose.
Pressure: The material gets transferred through the gas hose with the help of a vacuum or pressure. The amount of pressure gas, liquid, or steam required for the transfer is another factor to consider. The thicker the material or liquid to be transferred, the more pressure it will require to push the material through the hose. It would require a more reinforced industrial product capable of withstanding a higher strain on the respective hose material.
The actual working pressure of the gas hose should be higher than the application’s working pressure.
End Connections: There is a variety of end connection types for flexible gas hoses to consider while designing the hose system. Selecting the wrong type of end connections of the gas hoses can undermine the process, putting workers at risk and compromising the bottom line. It is crucial to routinely review the performance of the respective end connections.
Delivery: This property is related to the permeation of the gas to go through the hose and get delivered at the other end. Gas hoses are made out of metals that are regarded as ideal for different applications. In this aspect, permeability can be a significant concern.
Maintenance and Inspection of CNG Hose
To guarantee your gas hoses are in peak condition, you need to perform regular leak checks and inspect for visual damage. Pay close attention to the connection points, as they're common sources of issues. By staying vigilant, you can catch potential problems early and maintain a safe setup.
Regular Leak Checks
Regularly checking for leaks in your gas hoses is vital to confirm safety and prevent potential hazards. You don't want to compromise your freedom by neglecting this important task. A simple leak can escalate into a dangerous situation, but catching it early empowers you to stay in control.
Start by using a soapy water solution. Mix a bit of dish soap with water in a spray bottle. Spritz it along the hose, focusing on connections and joints. If bubbles form, you've got a leak. It's a quick, inexpensive way to confirm your hoses are secure.
Another method involves utilizing a gas leak detector, which is a handy tool for anyone who values their independence. These devices are easy to use and can quickly identify even the smallest leaks. When you have the tools to check for leaks, you're not reliant on anyone else to confirm your safety.
Visual Damage Inspection
Inspecting your gas hoses for visual damage is an essential step in maintaining safety and functionality. You don't want to be caught off guard by a faulty hose when you're in the middle of an important task. Start by giving your gas hoses a thorough once-over, looking for any obvious signs of wear and tear. Cracks, abrasions, or bulges are all red flags that shouldn't be ignored.
Pay attention to any discoloration or signs of heat damage. These could indicate that the hose has been exposed to conditions beyond its design limits. Flex the hose slightly to check for stiffness or brittleness, as these are also indicators that it's time for a replacement. You're looking for a hose that's flexible and free of defects.
Don't forget to inspect the outer covering as well. Any damage to this protective layer can compromise the integrity of the entire hose. By taking these simple steps, you guarantee your gas hoses are in top condition, giving you the freedom to focus on your projects without worrying about unexpected failures. Safety and reliability are just a quick inspection away.
Connection Point Examination
When examining your gas hoses, don't overlook the connection points, as these are critical for maintaining a secure and leak-free system. Inspecting these areas guarantees the freedom to go about your tasks without worrying about potential hazards. Start by checking that all fittings are tightly secured. Loose connections can lead to leaks, which not only waste gas but can also pose serious safety risks.
Next, look for signs of wear or corrosion around the connection points. Even a tiny crack or rust spot can compromise the integrity of the system. If you spot any damage, replace the connectors immediately. It's a small step that can save you from major headaches down the line.
Don't forget to test for leaks periodically. A simple soap and water solution can help you identify any escaping gas. Apply the solution around the connection points and watch for bubbles. If you see any, tighten the connections or replace faulty parts.
Regular maintenance of your gas hose connections helps you maintain control over your environment, assuring safety and efficiency. With these steps, you're free to focus on what truly matters, without the constant worry of gas leaks.
